![]() ![]() Coach Gennrich always says getting good, tough competition early in the year helps us out in the long run.Pet owners love Native American words and names because they contain valuable meanings that would be very unique for a pet. “There’s a lot of good teams in that conference. “I am really excited about switching to the FVA,” Cliver said. It’s that tough competition that has Cliver excited about his team’s future. I’m going to have to have a team that wrestles hard every night to win some duals and then it will be by just a few points, instead of having some nights knowing we are going to win by 30 or 40.” The teams at the bottom of the FVA are a lot stronger than the bottom teams in the Bay. What I like about the FVA is there is much more balance. But looking at the past few years, if you look at the top teams from the Bay and the FVA, they are comparable. “Obviously, this year Kaukauna is having a phenomenal year. You look at scores from the Pulaski Invite and the past few years, they’ve been right there with Kaukauna. In the Bay you have (Luxemburg)-Casco and Oconto Falls. Size-wise it’s definitely where we belong. “When it first was talked about a couple of years ago but was voted down, I wanted to be in the FVA. “Speaking just from wrestling standpoint, I’m excited,” Gennrich said of the switch in conferences. “Work hard and try to get to the finals and win,” Barnett said.Īlthough the focus is on the upcoming regional, Gennrich said he thinks moving into the FVA will only help his program get even stronger in the future. “Definitely, my goal is to get to state.”īarnett is also focused on the task at hand. “I expect to go into regionals and wrestle and do my best and, hopefully, that will make me come out on top,” Luker said. Going into regionals, Luker has one goal he is hoping to achieve. But when you step out on the mat, all you are are wrestlers and age doesn’t matter at that point.” Coming into the season, probably like most kids, I thought I was a freshman wrestling all of these older kids and I may not be able to win. “I had a lot of help from my coaches and teammates and they’ve made me a lot better than I was at the beginning of the year. “I was really surprised,” Luker said of his 30-plus win season. Luker said that he has gained a lot of confidence as the season has progressed. ![]() We don’t have just one or two leaders and I think that has helped us.” “They are not only good leaders, but also allowed us to be leaders as well. “The seniors have helped out a lot,” Cliver said. They willingly listened to the captains and Coach G, anything for them to get better.”Ĭliver said having a senior group that put the team ahead of any individual goals was helpful as well. You could tell they want to be good and be the best they can. I think our future looks good for when we go into the FVA. A lot of our younger kids stepped it up and were able to help us out this season. “We tried to be conference champions but we lost to Luxemburg-Casco. “I definitely would say it went pretty darn good,” Rynish said. Add in senior Nate Rynish’s 32-8 record at 160 and sophomore Joe Cliver’s 27 wins at 132 pounds and the Polar Bears are a team to be reckoned with this weekend. I had no idea we would have two 30-win seasons from my freshmen already.”įreshman Elliott Luker has won 31 of his 37 matches at 126 pounds, while freshman Jacob Barnett is 30-8 at 106. They all kind of bought in and we’ve had a much more successful season than I had anticipated. What I see happening now is this is the first year of our next five-year cycle. “I had a five year plan when I started 12 years ago and it took that long to turn things around,” Gennrich said. Gennrich said he knew his team was better coming into this season, but didn’t realize it was this good. They set a nice example for the younger kids.” The senior group has no real superstar, but real good leaders. Our makeup is pretty young, and that’s encouraging. “We have real strong freshmen that came in this year. “I kind of had my eye on this class for a couple of years,” Hortonville coach Chris Gennrich said. The Polar Bears, who will be wrestling as members of the Fox Valley Association next season, have relied on a very young lineup and parlayed that into a third-place finish in the Bay, behind champion Luxermburg-Casco and Denmark. ![]() Hortonville has already wrestled its final Bay Conference meet and is now focused on Saturday’s regional at Neenah, beginning at 10 a.m. Not only are the Polar Bears turning things around on the mat after a couple of down years, but it has also been a time of transition for them off of it. It has been an interesting season for the Hortonville wrestling team. ![]()
